Sonic Mega Collection Sound Problems

When playing Sonic Mega Collection Plus on my laptop, during the game the sound crackles, distorts and is interupted. Does anyone know how to sort the problem? My laptop has a better sound card and graphics card than needed as the laptop is several years newer than the game. Thanks.
