Total War

I've had M2:TW since release and I'm finally starting to play it. It's a good game but I find that it greatly falls short due to its horrendous AI. Light infantry will mass charge my bowman until then get within the range of twenty feet and then they just stand there and get shot at. Cavalry is a pain too. Is there any patches, official or not, to fix this? Also how's the rest of the franchise? I was looking into maybe getting Rome but I'd like to know which is the best they've turned out.Total War
There is a 600mb patch for medieval. Don't expect to see a big boost in the ai, it's fairly horrible and exploitable (especially during siege). Rome is better than medieval with the ai. You can get the gold version on steam for free if you pre-order empire-total wars.Total War
The AI took a nosedive with Rome and hasn't improved at all since. Unfortunately, it's hardcoded into the game and it can't be modded. There has been some 3rd party work on unit formation behaviour which does help somewhat, but it's still dumb as a post. AI cavalry is too passive and rarely charges missile units or skirmishers. CA and Sega have promised a totally new, capable and challenging AI for Empire, both in the strategic and the tactical portions of the game. Of course, that's what they said after the distaster that was Rome: TW and it's never materialized. I wish they'd go back to the AI they had in Shogun and the original Medieval TW. WHile not great, it was at least an adequate challenge.Anyway, head over to www.twcenter.net and check out some of the mods. I highly recommend Stainless Steel, but it still needs a little tweaking. I slowed down the tactical movement rates by about 20% and made the range of archers more uniform. The Dominion of the Sword and Europa Barborum II mods are looking good as well.
Yeah the AI in that game is rather bad and there isnt much to do about it. If you really are sick of the AI but love the concept, Rome Total War is for you.
Rome is my favorite, outside of the original Shogun of course. And ya, I agree with you on the AI. Its pretty bad; I eventually just kinda gave up and hit auto-resolve because the battles were easy and tedious. Still an awesome, awesome game though.
The only issue with hitting auto-resolve for me is the fact the victor tends to be the one with a larger army. I'm almost done conquering France and they still have a huge force pent up in one territory. Burning economy for a large enough force isn't appealing so I go for superior tactical genious against an AI without any at all.So the first Medievil is supposed to boast competant AI? How is it outside of battle? Does diplomacy and such actually work too?
Get the original Medieval. Best in the series.

Well that's good enough I guess. I'll give the first Medievil a go.
